Secondary Structure
Secondary Structure
Secondary members are essential load-bearing elements that ensure the building’s stability against forces from all directions. These include purlins, girts, eave struts, rod bracing, and open steel web joists.
Purlins, Girts, and Eave Struts
Purlins, girts, and eave struts are secondary structural components that support wall and roof panels. Purlins are used on the roof, girts on the walls, and eave struts at the junction of the sidewall and roof. Secondary members serve two main functions: they act as struts to help resist longitudinal loads such as wind and earthquake forces, and they provide lateral bracing to the compression flanges of the main frame members, thereby enhancing frame capacity.

Purlins and girts are structural elements crafted from cold-formed steel in Z and C sections, supported by columns, rafters, or building walls. They can be lapped and nested at the supports to form a continuous beam configuration. Positioned under the roof, along walls, and around the building’s perimeter, they provide support for roof sheeting and wall cladding. The Strucxel Advantage
- Allows for large column spacing.
- Exhibits corrosion resistance due to rigorous surface preparation and superior on-line painting.
- Requires minimal maintenance as they are pre-galvanized.
Eave struts are typically made from cold-formed ‘C’ sections and are rolled to match the roof slope. Their primary role is to support gutters and serve as the junction between the roof and wall cladding. The Strucxel Advantage
- Enables large column spacing.
- Resists corrosion due to rigorous surface preparation and superior on-line painting.
- Requires minimal maintenance as they are pre-galvanized.
These long-span, load-bearing members are designed to directly support floors and roof decks in buildings. The Strucxel Advantage
- Allows for large column spacing.
This member is engineered to maintain the building’s stability against longitudinal forces from wind, cranes, and earthquakes. The Strucxel Advantage
- Can accommodate any length.
- Available painted or pre-galvanized.
